Sandi Vs The Voice Of Temptation :: essays research papers

You may not recognise me at first. But trust me, you know me well. I'm the voice that makes you crave those "Light and Tangy" potato chips, and the mocha cream puff - the one with inch-thick cream and smooth lemon vanilla custard, sandwiched between light choux pastry with mocha flavoured icing on top, drizzled with chocolate. Do you know who I am now?I'm the reason you smoke 20 cigarettes every day - you try to give up, but we both know you always cave in and smoke all the more. We both know you'll never give up. You like it too much. In fact, you need one right now, don't you? Go on: have one. You know it's no risk, even sensible Logic tells you that people get killed just crossing the road. "We've all gotta die sometime" - right? And, don't worry about that cream puff - you can walk the dogs later to work the calories off. Ok, so we both know Procrastination will come along and you'll put it off until tomorrow - but don't worry about that now. You need a cigarette and one more is not going to kill you (not right now anyway). Why not enjoy the moment? Got ya! See: it works every time!Remember the other day when you "chose" not to go to school because, after all, you weren't going to miss anything important, were you? That was me. Ha! There you were, snuggled in your fluffy doona, sleepy, and warm. As you woke, you sensed the dark clouds outside dimming the room, and you heard the rain splattering on the roof and lashing at the windows, and it was such a good idea to stay there wasn't it? Yes, you certainly thought so at the time. You missed the start of a new topic at school, but hey, you'll catch up. Of course the first thing you'll have to do is finish catching up on the theory you missed from before ... but you can do it ... later. Things always work out - just go with the flow - hey, I wouldn't want you to worry now, would I? Trust me!Trust you? Now that you've revealed your true colours I realise what a fool I've been. I've listened to you all along, going against what I truly knew was good for me, all the time unaware of your power over me.

Moral Order in “King Lear” Essay

Tragedy is an essential aspect of many of Shakespeare’s most critically acclaimed plays. A.C. Bradley, one of the foremost thinkers of Shakespeare’s works, created a theory that explored these tragic dramas. The concept of Good and Evil become essential to humanity, and as a result, figure prominently in a balance of what he refers to as a moral order. A. C. Bradley found a common link or thread that remains to this day consistent with all theories regarding tragedy – that the ultimate power in the tragic world is a moral order. According to A. C. Bradley, the main source of calamity and death in the tragic play is never good. In Shakespeare’s drama, evil is the force responsible for the phenomenon of tragedy. This force is â€Å"not mere imperfection but plain moral evil† (A. C. Bradley 689). In King Lear, evil takes its core power from greediness and ingratitude of king’s two daughters, Goneril and Regan. Their intentions and deliberate actions are pure evil, â€Å"Beneath is all the fiend’s. There’s hell, there’s darkness, there is the sulphurous pit†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (4.6. 143-144). The reason why the two sisters praise their father in the beginning of the play is justified by their desire to inherit Lear’s kingdom and supremacy. Goneril’s and Regan’s declarations of their great love for King Lear are insincere, because their actions contradict with what they proclaim, â€Å"His [Lear’s] daughters seek his [Lear’s] death†¦Ã¢â ‚¬ (3.4. 163). Because of Goneril’s utter ungratefulness and lack of love or compassion, she mistreats her father and insults his dignity, â€Å"She [Goneril] has abated me [Lear] of half my train; Looked black upon me; struck me with her tongue, Most serpent-like, upon the very heart† (2.4. 175-178). Her sister, Regan, due to her alike vile nature, shows her entire support and endorsement to such a behavior. Edmund’s character comes from the same evil ground as the one of the two vicious sisters. He is, too, engrossed by the desire to own his father’s land, and thus, commits treachery and deceit, â€Å"†¦thou [Edmund] art a traitor, False to thy gods, thy brother, and thy father†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (5.3. 159-160). The wicked qualities and the intentional wrong doings of these evil characters are the main cause of grief and suffering in the King Lear tragic play, â€Å"How sharper than a serpent’s it is to have a thankless child† (1.4. 291-291). Therefore, in Shakespearean drama the commotion of tragedy proceeds primarily from the  actions of the ominous characters in the play. If the evil purpose disturbs the peace and order in the world, then, this ultimate order must be inimical to this power and be akin to good. Next, A. C. Bradley diverts his attention to the main character in Shakespearean play, the tragic hero. To be thought of as an honorable and highly admirable individual, the tragic hero still shows some evident imperfection or dreadful flaw. This tragic trait of the hero is vile in its nature, and therefore, contributes to the tragic effect of the play. King Lear’s fatal decision to banish his youngest daughter, Cordelia, and his most trusted servant, Kent, is incited by king’s excessive vanity and hastiness, â€Å"†¦he [Lear] hath ever but slenderly known himself†¦ Such unconstant stars are we like to have from him [Lear] as this of Kent’s banishment† (1.1. 322-330). Lear is not happy with Cordelia’s simple, though true, declaration of love for him, â€Å"†¦I [Cordelia] love your Majesty According to my bond, no more no less (1.1. 97-98). The king is not satisfied with such a mere and unaffected answer due to his arrogance and strong sense of superiority. Thus, he makes a grave decision to exile Cordelia from his kingdom, and gives all of his land to Goneril and Regan, which leads to his tragic disappointment, emotional breakdown, and death, â€Å"Your old kind father, whose frank heart gave all! O, that way madness lies†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (3.4. 25-26). The ultimate power in the tragic world is distressed by the evil acts and decisions of the dramatic character. Then, this ultimate moral power must have an opposing reaction to the wickedness in order to repair the essential order of the universe. Another aspect of the evil power that A. C. Bradley conveys in his article, The Shakespearean Tragic Hero, is that evil reveals itself everywhere as a negative, weakening, destructive effect. â€Å"It isolates, disunites, and tends to annihilate not only its opposite but itself† (A. C. Bradley 690). The evil effect in King Lear spreads and poisons lives of all soul characters, causing death and destruction in the play. Goneril and Regan are also affected by their own wickedness, â€Å"Each jealous of the other†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (5.1. 67). Due to their selfishness and sinister nature, the two sisters try to raze one another in their competition for power and control. In conclusion,  Goneril poisons her sister in the sake of winning Edmund’s favour. Nevertheless, Edmund is retributed by his brother, Edgar, who slays him in a fair fight. Goneril, who is not able to abide her disgraceful downfall, commits suicide. Although, these characters die, the reader does feel pity for them because their death is necessary factor of retribution in a tragic play, â€Å"This judgment of the heavens, that makes us tremble, Touches us not with pity† (5.3. 275-276). If there was no punishment for evil performance and immoral behavior, then evil power would predominate the world, and there would be no means for the moral order to exist among the humanity,If that the heavens do not their visible spiritsSend quickly down to tame these vile offenses,It will come,Humanity must perforce prey on itself,Like monsters of the deep (Act IV, Scene 2, 52-56). Hence, the existence of the ultimate moral order in the tragic world fundamentally depends on the goodness of humanity. Since the tenor of evil is belligerent and destructive to such an existence, then, people of the universe must yield to good. In essence, the power of the moral order presents the revenge and the concept of justice in the tragic world. Therefore, it suggests the idea of fate. Still, although the retribution is served, there is no indication of â€Å"poetic justice†. Moral order functions according to its righteous nature. It reacts to the attack of the evil force in order to sustain and balance itself. During this equilibration, evil is isolated and goodness triumphs over the tragic world. 1920s Fashion - Research Paper - 1069 Words

The 1920’s fashion was a period of liberation, change, and even more importantly a movement towards the modern era. Fashion in the 1920’s varied throughout the decade but one could see the noticeable change from the previous fashion statements and eras. At the start of the decade, women began emancipating themselves from the constricting fashions by wearing more comfortable apparel. As women gained more rights and World War I forced them to become more independent, flappers came to be, mass-produced garments became available, and artistic movements increased in popularity, one can see how the fashions from the roaring twenties characterized the time and redefined womanhood. (1920s clothing 1) In the early 1920s, change advanced†¦show more content†¦Thanks to Coco Chanel, the iconic flapper image most closely associated with the roaring twenties came about. The flapper and flapper image didn’t actually come to be until around 1926 and even then was only in style for about three years. Typical flappers were women who appeared to have a bold attitude and were independent women who didn’t adhere to the previously innocent housewife image. A flapper usually had a bob haircut, a shorter than average dress, a flat chest, wore tons of make-up, drank illegal alcohol, smoked with a long cigarette holder, exposed her limbs and danced the Charleston. This was a drastic change from the typical American housewife to the reckless rebel. The flapper dresses stressed above the knee hemlines and construed straight, sleek shapes. This was the first time in centuries women’s legs were being seen in a garment. (1920s Fashion 1) Flappers loved to jazz up their co stume and even their image. Many flappers’ dresses were adorned with jewels and intricate beading. The main object of the flapper image was to appear almost boyish rather than looking feminine. (1920s clothing 1) The nineteen twenties became the first century where mass produced goods really became available and made a significant impact in everyone’s lives. High fashion before the 1920s had really only been for the richer women of society who could afford such luxuries. A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift Essay - 746 Words

Not So Modest Proposal In 1729, with â€Å"A Modest Proposal;, Jonathan Swift raised the argument that, â€Å"For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden to their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the public; (44), we should rid ourselves of them by our own consumption. We should bake them, fry them, or serve them in a fricassee or ragout. Swift proposes his â€Å"humble; thoughts, for which he expects no objection, on the idea that it would be beneficial to the parents, the country, and even the children if they were to be eaten. He also states that anyone who objects should â€Å"ask the parents of these mortals whether they would not at this day think it a great happiness to have been sold for food at†¦show more content†¦This argument is emotionally sound as well. Swift only wants the best for the children and his country. He has no ulterior motives to profit from his idea because he has no young children and his wife is past child bearing age. When first read, this work could be seen as an appalling display of selfishness and greed but when further analyzed it should be seen as just the opposite. Although Swift’s literal argument is that we should eat the poor children to rid ourselves of their burden, his real argument is that we should, in fact, care for and treat the children with the respect and decency they deserve. It is because of this underlying argument that i wholeheartedly agree with â€Å"A Modest Proposal;.Swift believes that the condition of the children in Ireland is so intolerable that they would be better off dead. This argument can also be seen in the youth of America today. Many children these days lack the moral guidance that is needed to become upstanding members of society. This generalization of today’s youth is shown through the absence of attention from their parents, the condescending perception by society, and their consistent decline of hope, probably much like it was in Swif t’s time. This absence of attention can be seen through parents disregarding their responsibility to be role models as they sit their children in front of the television for hours at a time allowing them the media toShow MoreRelatedA Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift Essay836 Words   |  4 PagesIn Jonathan Swift’s â€Å"A Modest Proposal†, we are exposed to the timeless issue of homelessness and the state’s role in their social welfare. William Shakespeare s Much Ado About Nothing

Shakespeare was a very famous playwright in the 1500’s. He started off as an actor in 1590 and he worked his way up to being a shareholder; which means that he owned a proportion of the company and he could still be a part in the plays. Later in 1599 when The Globe Theater was built, he moved there and was a shareholder. During these times he wrote several plays for the theater. Some of these include Much Ado about Nothing, Twelfth Night, Love’s Labour’s Lost, and A Midsummer s Night’s Dream. In the year 1600, Shakespeare wrote the play Much Ado about Nothing. Later the following year, in 1601, Shakespeare wrote a Twelfth Night. He goes to Olivia and professes his love for her. She, having no clue about this plan, thinks that Malvolio is mad. She got the other servants to co me and take him away from her. This example shows that even though Olivia, being the upper class figure in this situation, and having the control to remove Malvolio, it was the servants that caused the ordeal to take place. This reveals that the lower class has power. It may not be as obvious as living in a mansion with servants, money, and authority, but they can still alter situations even when not in full complete power. Now, compare that to the situation in Much Ado about Nothing. Although the Main Characters are predominantly apart of the royal family, that didn t stop Don John from making Claudio believe that Hero was unfaithful. He used Borachio to make love to Margaret, Hero’s servant, in Hero’s bedroom window. Don John got Don Pedro and Claudio to witness this account. Don John is not one of the plays central characters, but he completely twisted and changed the plot. He deceived the two men as well as the whole rest of the royal family making them all believe that Hero was having an affair. That being said, leads to the next comparison which is betrayal. In both plays there is a major betrayal that takes place. In the Twelfth Night, Sebastian was saved from the shipwreck by Antonio. Antonio cares so much for Sebastian that he followed him

According to Guzzi et al. (2013), the project would involve the effective processing of the communication plan. The communication plan would be developed for forming the system integration and development of the project plan for forming the effective and improved processing of the operations. The effective communication plan would develop the improvement of the facilities and formation of the system integration (Muszynska et al., 2015). The development of the project communication plan would integrate the development of the operations and it would form the analysis of the effective project operations. Requirements of Communication in Project The communication in project would require the development of the effective management strategy for the implication of the project operations. The requirements of the communication for the project of Riverina Agriculture and Lifestyle Show include the use of effective management and processing of organization. Kaufman et al. (2014) have pointed that the project conveyance had formed the development of the effective control of the communication process in the organization. The requirement analysis had formed the development of the effective communication process. The implementation of the project progress would involve the deployment of the effective control strategies in the organization. The importance of communication in the project of Riverina Agriculture and Lifestyle Show are, Convey of Requirements: The project deploys the effective transmission of the requirements to the project stakeholders. The requirements would involve the development of the project operations and the analysis of the option for merging the development of the project (Heagney, 2016). The communication plan would involve the development of the effective communication and increment of the information. The requirements would imply the secure development of the project operations to form the effective deployment of the operations (Guzzi et al., 2013). The project plan requirements, cost effective requirements, and development plan requirements would help in forming the effective deployment model for the project. Initialization of Project: The initialization of the project is another major factor for the system development and processing. The initialization of the project would help in system development and processing (Lock, 2014). The initialization of the project would tend to form the effective system integration and development of project plan. The development of the project plan would integrate the smart processing of the development of the operations would integrate the development of the operations and it would form the analysis of the smart operations. Project Operation Division: The division of the project operation would include the use of effective communication plan (Muszynska et al., 2015). The division of the project operations would involve the development of the effective and improved processing. The division of the work would involve the development of the project implementation plan. The communication would help in dividing the work among the team members. Communication Methods for the project There are two types of communication by which humans can interact and send message to each other and they are verbal and non verbal (written). The implication of the effective communication would help in forming the system development and process improvement (Verzuh, 2015). The project would involve the use of the development of the operations. The project would involve the deployment of the effective processing of the information. The methods of communication include, Meetings: The project meetings are another important factor that results in forming the effective communication methods for the integration of the operations (Zulch, 2014). The meetings would be integrated for forming the effective convey of the operations and development of the integration methods. The meetings would involve the supplementary development of the operational management. The meetings would be held for forming the effective development of the system integration and development. The meetings would form the development of the operations and it would involve the effective deployment of the effective processing and development. Reports and Documents: The documents would also serve the purpose of effective communication (Snyder, 2014). The reports and documents would also serve the effective methods of communicating the necessary information to the immediate stakeholders. The stakeholders of the project would tend to use documentation for development of the process. The communication would ensure that the effective processing of information would help in communicating the development of the project. The data and information are transferred to the relative individual person. Email Conversation: The email conversation is deployed for forming the use of the technology for developing and implementing effective communication. Internet connections would be used for transmitting the effective communication within the organization (Zulch, 2014). The email communication would help in forming the faster development of messages and conversing with the operations of the project. Email Conversation Table 1: Communication Matrix for the Project (Source: Kutikov, Woo Catto, 2016, pp- 183) Reflection I have analyzed the influence of the project management concepts and used it for forming the effective processing of the information. The study had helped in understanding that there are three methods of the communication in project and it would involve the use of the both verbal and non verbal skills of communication. Moreover, the operations would tend to implement the effective operational requirements for the project. The use of project management principles and operations would involve the effective processing by communication and involvement. The development of the project would tend to form the analysis of the effective and improved processing. It is also possible that we might come across the system development for carrying out the information processing within the organization. The deployment of the project principles would involve the development of the effective and improved functions for carrying out the activities of the project. I have come to realize that the project r equires the deployment of the effective communication in the organization. The implication of the effective communication would be supported by the formation of the communication plan and its management. The management of the project would be evitable for developing the improvement of operations and deploying the sufficient operations.
